About Travel Time

Estimate how long a trip takes from distance and realistic average speed, with an optional arrival time.

Travel time is simply distance divided by average speed — but units and reality complicate it. This calculator normalizes kilometers/miles and km/h/mph/m/s automatically, then divides to get the duration.

Use a realistic average, not the speed limit: traffic, stops, and terrain usually cut 10–20% off. Add an optional departure time to get the arrival clock time, including next-day rollover.

All math runs in your browser.

Where it is used

Road-trip planning, delivery ETAs, commute estimates, and pacing long drives with realistic (not speed-limit) averages.

How to use the Travel Time

  1. Distance — enter the value (e.g. 300).
  2. Distance Unit — enter the value.
  3. Average Speed — enter the value (e.g. 80).
  4. Speed Unit — enter the value.
  5. Departure Time HH:MM (optional) — enter the value (e.g. 08:30).
  6. Calculate — press the Calculate button to see the result instantly above.

Formula

Time = Distance / Average speed (units normalized to km and km/h first).

Examples

Example

distance:300
distanceUnit:km
speed:80
speedUnit:kmh
departTime:08:30
Result: 3h 45m — arrive 12:15

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use the speed limit as average speed?
No — real averages run lower because of traffic, signals, and stops. Subtract roughly 10–20% from the limit for a believable estimate.
Does it account for breaks?
Not automatically. Add your planned stop minutes to the departure math, or lower the average speed to absorb them.
Miles and mph together — any conversion needed?
No. Matching imperial units divide out cleanly; the tool only converts when distance and speed units differ.
